Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

What is Human Papillomavirus (HPV)?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) refers to a group of viruses that can infect the skin and mucous membranes, and are commonly transmitted from person to person. While many HPV infections are transient and cause no issues, persistent HPV infections are a major cause of cervical and other cancers. HPV can lead to cervical cancer in women and can also cause genital warts, as well as cancers of the penis, vulva, anus, and throat.

Transmission and Risk Factors

HPV is primarily spread through sexual contact with an infected person, including all types of sexual intercourse and skin-to-skin contact with the genital area. Both men and women who are sexually active can transmit the virus. Additionally, HPV can be transmitted from mother to child during childbirth.

HPV Vaccination & Treatment

Several strains of HPV can be prevented through vaccination. However, the HPV vaccines do not cover all HPV strains, so it is crucial to use barrier methods such as condoms during all types of sexual activity to reduce the risk of HPV and other sexually transmitted infections. Women should also continue to undergo routine cervical smear tests, even if they have been vaccinated against HPV.

To protect yourself and your partners, consider getting vaccinated and follow preventive measures. For more information on HPV vaccination and testing, contact our healthcare professionals today.
