Why follow-up matters.

New Medicine Service — Week 1–2, NHS-funded

What is the NMS?

The New Medicine Service is an NHS-funded conversation, not a bookable appointment. When your pharmacist dispenses your first prescription for a qualifying long-term medicine, they’ll identify you as eligible and invite you to engage with the service.

How does it work?

Three steps: (1) Identification — your pharmacist spots an eligible new medicine at dispensing. (2) Intervention — a confidential chat about how you’re getting on, side-effects and how to take it correctly. (3) Follow-up — we check in again about 4 weeks later. Both conversations can be by phone or face-to-face, whichever suits you.

Who is it for?

Adults newly prescribed a long-term medicine for asthma, COPD, type 2 diabetes, hypertension or anticoagulation (apixaban, warfarin and similar). Your pharmacist will tell you on the day if your medicine qualifies — no need to ask in advance.

NHS-funded and free of charge. You don’t book the NMS — your pharmacist invites you when you collect a qualifying new prescription. The conversation happens by phone or in branch, whichever you prefer.

New Medicine Service FAQ

Common questions, answered.

Walk-in is welcome at any of our four branches, but booking your initial chat guarantees a slot in our consultation room without waiting.

Initial chat: 5–10 minutes. Follow-up review at week 4: 10–15 minutes. Both can be done by phone or in branch — whichever suits you.

We can liaise with your prescriber if we identify anything that needs their attention. All notes stay on your NHS pharmacy record.

All four Oxford branches offer the New Medicine Service. Pharmacist availability varies by branch — booking confirms a slot with a named pharmacist.

Absolutely — bring whoever helps you manage your medicine. Family members and carers are welcome at either review.

No — the New Medicine Service is fully funded by the NHS. There is no out-of-pocket cost and no prescription charge for the consultation.
