Wegovy, containing the active ingredient semaglutide, is an injectable medication designed to assist in weight loss. It is primarily indicated for individuals with a BMI of over 30 or for those with a BMI exceeding 27 if they have associated health conditions such as hypertension or type 2 diabetes. The medication works by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which regulates appetite, thus helping to reduce food intake.
Unlike many weight-loss treatments, Wegovy is administered once weekly, making it convenient for long-term use. It’s important to note that Wegovy weight loss injections must be used in conjunction with a calorie-restricted diet and an increase in physical activity to achieve optimal weight loss results.
Semaglutide, the active substance, is also found in Ozempic, a drug approved in the UK for treating type 2 diabetes. However, while Ozempic helps manage blood sugar levels in diabetics, Wegovy is specifically formulated and licensed for weight management with a different dosing regimen.

The Wegovy dosage is gradually increased every four weeks over a 16-week period. Patients begin with a weekly dose of 0.25 mg for the first four weeks, then slowly raise the dosage until reaching the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly from week 17 onwards.
This gradual increase is important because it helps reduce the risk of side effects. If side effects do occur, they are more likely to appear during the dose escalation phase and typically improve afterward.
Clinical trials have shown that Wegovy leads to significant weight loss compared to a placebo over 68 weeks. In one study, participants using Wegovy saw an average weight reduction of 14.9%, much greater than the 2.4% in the placebo group.
Moreover, 83.5% of patients on Wegovy lost at least 5% of their body weight, compared to just 31.1% in the placebo group. Another trial confirmed these findings, reporting a notable weight decrease compared to placebo. Given these strong results, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has approved Wegovy for managing obesity.
Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, is part of a group of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These drugs replicate the effects of a natural hormone in the body known as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which is vital for managing appetite and the feeling of fullness.
By mimicking this hormone, Wegovy targets receptors in the brain that regulate appetite, leading to a sense of fullness and reduced hunger. This, in turn, helps lower food cravings. When used alongside a calorie-restricted diet and increased exercise, this mechanism can aid in weight loss.
As with any medication, some people may experience side effects while taking Wegovy. However, it’s important to understand that not everyone will, and in most instances, these side effects are mild. Common side effects linked to Wegovy include headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and fatigue.
These typically lessen over time as your body adjusts to the medication. Gradually increasing the dosage every four weeks helps reduce the chances of side effects. If your side effects are severe or persist, it’s recommended to consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
